Forgotten: Hats Off to Huron’s Historical Hats

May 7 @ 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm

Historic image of three women wearing hats, with text promoting workshop

There was a time when hats and headpieces were worn for every occasion and the making of hats was its own unique industry and art form. Discover the history and art of constructing hats at the Huron County Museum with Jennifer Triemstra-Johnston, a professional costume designer and milliner. Using artifacts and photographs from the Museum’s collection, Jennifer will highlight how different hats from the Victorian era through to the 20th century were made, and discuss the little known history of local milliners in Huron.

After the the talk and short tea break, join Jennifer to learn how to make your own fabric flowers using historical techniques!

No experience is necessary for this fun, interactive afternoon of appreciating historical fashions! Space is limited. If you are not feeling well, please visit another time. This event is presented to coincide with the museum’s temporary exhibit Forgotten: People & Portraits of the County.

About the Guest Presenter: Jennifer Triemstra-Johnston is a professional costume designer and builder with over 25 years of experience. She has been a contract faculty member for the Theatre and Dance Departments at York University and Ryerson University and Ryerson School of Fashion. Currently Jennifer is the director of the Fashion Arts & Creative Textiles Studio (FACTS) and the owner of Pick a Posie Costume Company, a secondhand shop selling fashion, vintage and costumes in Blyth.
