Put Yourself Behind Bars Selfie Contest

Put Yourself Behind Bars Selfie Contest

Even though the Huron Historic Gaol remains closed this season, visitors can still go behind bars at the new selfie station found just outside the Gaol walls! And to celebrate this new feature, we are hosting a selfie contest and invite you to put yourself behind bars for your chance to win a Huron County Museum merch bundle!

The new selfie station features a recreation of the Gaol’s iconic iron doors by local blacksmith Jim Wallace and can be found at the Gaol entrance. This permanent structure is now available year round for visitors to share their visit to this National Historic Site.

To enter the contest, simply take a selfie behind the bars and post it to Facebook or Instagram by Oct. 12 using #HuronHistoricGaol. A random draw will take place on the morning of Tuesday, Oct. 13. The winner will take home a bundle featuring some of the Museum’s favourite merch, including a Gaol t-shirt, Museum tote bag, the famous two-headed calf stuffie, four visitor passes for admission to the Museum and Gaol (when it reopens), and more!

Thank you to Regional Tourism Organization 4 (RTO4) Shareable Moments Challenge for providing funding for this project.

Please note that the selfie station is not monitored and does not have sanitizer available. Please use at your own risk.

Collecting Memories for the Future: COVID-19

Collecting Memories for the Future: COVID-19

Huron County Museum staff may not be working at the physical location of the Museum but we are still working for the Museum and thinking about our collections, exhibitions and programmes.   Much of what we do relies on the words and collecting habits of others past and present.  With that mindset it is important now for us to think about the current Coronavirus pandemic and the future of collecting items relevant to Huron County throughout this time.

The collecting mandate for the Huron County Museum is to collect the stories and artifacts of our local area, with particular emphasis on items that were made by or used by Huron County people.   We are looking for your help to document and illustrate how Coronoavirus has affected us close to home.

When this crisis is over we will be putting together a collection of items relating to the Coronavirus pandemic to keep in our archives for future use and research.    Items could include: photographs, journals, letters, signs, or documents that tell the story of COVID-19 and its effects on the lives of those living in Huron County.

We understand that this is a difficult time for many so participation is voluntary and has no timeline.  Items may come today, 2 months from now, or even years from now.  The purpose of the collection will be to document and will be used for future research and exhibition.

If you are interested in helping create a documentary history of the pandemic in our community you may mail items to the Huron County Museum, 110 North St., Goderich; email to museum@huroncounty.ca; or bring your items directly to the Museum after the site re-opens to the public.  Staff are available by email to answer your questions.

Stay safe and healthy,

Old News is Good News: All About ‘Project Silas’

Old News is Good News: All About ‘Project Silas’

What discoveries await you in Huron’s newly digitized historical newspapers? Special Project Coordinator Jeremy Dechert introduces Project Silas! Stay tuned for more updates, search tips and highlights.

From The Brussels Post, Nov. 18, 1898.

The Huron County Library, in partnership with the Huron County Museum, has been digitizing, OCRing (optical character recognition technology which reads and transcribes images) and publishing historical newspapers from communities across Huron County. Codenamed Project Silas, this initiative is aimed at assisting both academic and casual researchers in their quest for knowledge of Huron County’s past. Local newspapers are robust sources of historical information due to their consistent and specific reporting on particular persons, events, and places. Digitizing newspapers which were previously on microfilm and allowing them to be text searchable further democratizes public information and saves researchers countless hours of work and frustration by making multiple papers available from the comfort of your own home.

Cultural Services staff at the County of Huron have worked diligently to both build the project structure and process and post newspapers from the towns and villages of Blyth, Exeter, Goderich, and Wingham so far. I took over the project at the beginning of this month, and have recently added papers from Brussels to the website. Papers from Clinton and Seaforth are soon to follow. By the end of 2017 we hope to have additional papers from Zurich, Gorrie, Wroxeter, and Goderich on the website as well.
